A carport, though very contemporary in material, such as a car canopy made from polyethylene, actually came to use in the early 1900’s With the advent of the “horseless carriage” there was much less need for a barn in every back yard. Instead a need arose for a place to park the car under cover. And so the carport was invented.
Another factor encouraging people to park under cover was the fact that car cabs were not totally enclosed until the mid 1900’s. No one likes to ride on a wet seat, plus water sun damage to the car mechanisms was another encouraging factor to the progression of carports.
Today carports include wooden, steel, aluminum, and car canopies. Car canopies are made from the vinyl type material polyethylene and a metal framework and are in the realm of portable carports. Polyethylene is actually a chemically heat bonded substance. It is triple layered and has a special ripstop weave to help prevent tearing. Also polyethylene is commonly treated with anti aging and fungal treatments and ultra violet ray barrier. This material is also advertized as being 100% waterproof. So for a durable light weight product this is a good choice.

The metal framework of a car canopy is typically a steel frame that is gray or white powder coated. For a smaller carport kits there are a total of either 6 or 8 legs that are 1 3/8”.
Poly car port kits can be simply a roof over the framework, or one, two, or three sided. There are some that even have a fourth side that is zippered to totally seal the weather out of the car canopy. Some unique designs have a zippered opening at the front and back to facilitate a drive though advantage.
Another used for a shelter made from this material includes a pool. A 20’x20’ design can cover a fairly large area.
A garden wedding a neighbor hosted last summer actually used a very dressed up form of a simple carport. The use for these shelters are endless.
Very light weight, a poly car port offers good protection, easy assembly, and also useable at picnics, yard sales, and even over a children’s wadding pool to protect them from the sun. All in all a car canopy is a great choice for many functions.
